Healthy Hair

5/30/2017

Have any of you been trying to reduce the toxic load in your home with regards to cleaning and personal care products? I have been very successful at making a lot of cleaning products using essential oils. I love the spray that I use to clean my countertops, which is a combination of water, white vinegar, and wild orange essential oil. I have also attempted to make some homemade hair products. It was fun trying to make a hair conditioner using avocados, but it left my hair feeling unclean and without any bounce to it. I recently tried doTERRA’s shampoo, conditioner and root to tip serum…and they are awesome! They are unlike any other hair products that I have used from other companies. The other “all natural shampoos” that I have tried did not lather and my hair felt dirty and oily after washing. Since using doTERRA’s shampoo (and conditioner), my hair feels so clean (as it should after shampooing, right?) and has been shinier and softer than ever. It has been growing much faster too. I love these products!! I came across the following graphic from www.honeycombmama.com and am eager to try some of these oils with my shampoo and conditioner. I would love to know how they work for you.

Battling Tick Bites

Tick season is pretty bad this year, but thankfully we have essential oils to help us and our pets. Use the following blend to repel ticks. This is safe for humans and dogs. If the Lemongrass and Eucalyptus blend does not seem to be powerful enough, then you could add 20 drops of Terrashield to it.
Picture
If you have a tick embedded in your skin, take a look at how fast peppermint oil works to get the tick to remove its head. The little buggers do not like peppermint oil!
According to a new report, tick-borne diseases are on the rise across much of the country. With that being said, it’s important to remain cautious. Watch this video on the power of essential oils.

10 Ways to Use Clove Oil

5/9/2017

Did you know that Clove is a powerhouse of an oil and has so many practical uses? I rub 1-2 drops on the bottoms of my feet every morning and every evening to help boost my antioxidant levels.

Here is a list of 10 ways to use Clove:
1.      To Boost the Immune System - Clove has 30x more anti-oxidants than blueberries! It’s a great oil to add to your daily routine to keep the immune system strong.
2.      For Toothaches - If you have any dental work done or have a toothache, use a drop of Clove Oil mixed with some Fractionated Coconut Oil and apply directly to the area of concern in the mouth...it works wonders! It will also temporarily numb the area.
3.      To Soothe a Sore Throat - Rub 1 drop of Melaleuca, Ginger, and OnGuard (which contains Clove) on the throat. You can also place the drops on your tongue and drink a glass of water. Please Note...it’s a little spicy, so this isn’t something for the kids.
4.      To Help Improve Cardiovascular Health - Rub 1 drop Clove oil diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil over the heart each day.
5.      As an Insect Repellent – Diffuse 3 drops of Clove oil along with Lemongrass Essential Oil to help ward insects away.
6.      Reduce Excess Gas - Rub 1 drop of Clove combined with a bit of Fractionated Coconut Oil on the abdomen.
7.      To Help Decongest the Sinuses - Diffuse 2 drops of Clove to aid in relieving mucous and loosen phlegm. You may also add 2 drops Clove with Fractionated Coconut Oil and rub onto your chest, back, and throat.
8.      To Help Balance Blood Sugar Levels - Rub 1-2 drops combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil on the feet twice a day.
9.      To Disinfect the Home - Add 10 drops of Clove to 8 ounces of water and 4 ounces of organic vinegar for an all-natural antimicrobial disinfectant to clean the kitchen and bathrooms.
10.    Stress Relief - Diffuse 4 drops of Clove, 2 drops of Lemon and 2 drops of Frankincense.

5 Oils for a Great NIght's Sleep

5/1/2017

Are you someone that cannot fall asleep easily? Or are you more like me...you fall asleep quickly, then at about 2am you wake up and cannot get back to sleep. How frustrating is that? This is not a minor issue. Lack of sleep is a huge problem for many people. Sleep is critical to cellular regeneration. You heal when you sleep. If you don't sleep well, you won't heal well. Therapeutic oils can help you get a more restful night's sleep. Here are 5 oils for a great night's sleep:
Picture
1. Lavender - Rub 1-2 drops on the bottoms of your feet to help calm the body before going to sleep. This oil is also wonderful to diffuse in your bedroom while you're sleeping. For kids, you can put a little of the oil on their favorite blanket or stuffed animal to help them calm down before bedtime.

2. Cedarwood - Rub 1-2 drops on the bottoms of the feet before bedtime for a solid night's sleep. Cedarwood has a calming and soothing effect on the mind.

3. Vetiver - This is a fantastic "shut-down-the-brain" oil. It can be diffused near your bed, or you can apply a drop or two to your feet or the back of your neck.

4. Ylang Ylang - To calm the body in the evening, apply a drop or two of Ylang Ylang to your neck or feet. It has a wonderful garden-like aroma, so it's a nice oil to diffuse while sleeping.

5. Serenity - The essential oils in this must-have blend were meticulously chosen to lessen feelings of tension, calm emotions, and leave a peaceful feeling. Serenity is the perfect blend to diffuse at bedtime for a restful night’s sleep, to calm a restless baby or child, or to help reduce the worry and stress so many of us feel.

Safer Scents

4/24/2017

Do you love to walk into a room where the air smells like spring flowers? Many people use room sprays, air fresheners, fragrance plug-ins, candles, and incense to create different aromas throughout the house. The indoor air may smell nice, but research has revealed that these increase the toxic load in your home. A safer way to scent your space is to use a few drops of an essential oil in a diffuser. There are many scents to choose from depending on your mood.
Citrus for energy
Lemon, lime and mandarin not only smell heavenly, but may also strengthen the immune system.  One of my favorite diffuser blends is the combination of the citrus wild orange along with peppermint. Talk about energizing! I diffuse this in my office and I am productive all day long.
Picture
Rosemary for focus
Research shows that people perform better on memory tests when they are in a room scented with rosemary.
Picture
Lavender for relaxation
Inhaling the scent of lavender can help slow down the nervous system and prep you for slumber. If Lavender is not enough to make you sleep soundly, try the Serenity blend. This blend is known as the Restful Blend. It contains Lavender, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Vetiver and Vanilla. I apply it to the soles of my feet every night for a restful sleep.

10 Ways to Use Lemon to Clean Your Home

4/17/2017

We know that lemon essential oil has great healing properties - it is used for allergies and congestion because it helps break down mucus and if inhaled or diffused, it instantly boosts your mood and energy.  I can't think of an essential oil with more uses than lemon. It's good in food, good for fighting allergies, good for cleaning…good for everything! It's one of my favorite springtime oils. Here are 10 ways you can use Lemon to clean your home.
1. Microwave—Microwaves are notorious for being tough to clean, especially after mishaps involving spaghetti sauce or tomato soup. To ease the pain of cleaning, simply microwave a cup filled with water and a few drops of Lemon, then wipe clean!

2. Dishwasher—Pour distilled vinegar into a dish and add 5–10 drops of Lemon oil. Place this dish in your empty dishwasher and run on high.

3. Stove Top—Lemon oil makes cleaning one of the dirtiest areas of the kitchen easy. Add vinegar and Lemon to a spray bottle, and watch the grime disappear!

4. Appliances—From dust to greasy food spills, appliances collect more dirt than you might think. A simple solution of Lemon oil, water, and vinegar will help you clean toasters, refrigerators, mixers, and more.

5. Garbage disposal—If you’ve been smelling something funky coming from your sink, it might be time to clean the garbage disposal. This DIY for Lemon disposal refreshers should help!

6. Ceiling Fan—Fan blades collect dust at turbo speeds and cling to them for as long as you let them. To avoid choking on dust bunnies while cleaning your ceiling fans, spray the inside of an old pillow case with a Lemon/water mixture and loop the fabric around each blade.
Picture
7. Washing Machine—Run a mixture of Lemon oil, baking soda, vinegar, and water through your empty machine on the hottest setting to break up dirt build-up and mildew. Scrub any excess with a sponge, then run the machine again with fresh water.

8. Trash Cans—Regularly cleaning out trash cans can eliminate odor. For indoor trash cans, spray the inside and outside of each can with a mixture of water, Lemon oil, and vinegar, then scrub with a sponge.
9. Windows and Windowsills—The same mixture of Lemon oil, water, and vinegar in a spray bottle that you’ve been using all around the house will do wonders for your windows and windowsills. Simply spray glass and wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel, then move onto ledges and sills with a toothbrush or damp sponge.

10. Air Vents—One of the most overlooked areas to keep clean in your home is the air you breathe! Clean vents with a sponge dipped in warm water, vinegar and Lemon oil to help eliminate allergens and dust from filling the air around you.

Frankincense & Myrrh for Healthy Cell Support

4/6/2017

Frankincense is renowned as one of the most prized and precious essential oils. Frankincense has extraordinary health benefits. In addition to its notoriety in the New Testament, the Babylonians and Assyrians would burn Frankincense in religious ceremonies and the ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to salves for soothing skin. This centuries-old knowledge contributes to the modern uses of Frankincense today. It is soothing and beautifying properties are used to rejuvenate skin and help reduce the appearance of imperfections. It is also used to help improve circulation and lower symptoms of joint or muscle pain. As the king of oils, Frankincense is known to support healthy cellular function. This is why I love Frankincense oil. I use it twice a day: in the morning, I rub it on the area of concern and before bedtime, I rub it on the soles of my feet. You can also diffuse it in your home. When inhaled or diffused, Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness. Some people believe the fragrance can increase your intuition and spiritual connection.

Myrrh oil is another healing and nurturing oil. I use this oil in combination with Frankincense. Ancient records show that Myrrh was deemed so valuable that at times it was valued at its weight in gold. Myrrh essential oil is derived from the gummy resin of the small, thorny Myrrh tree and has been used for centuries for its internal and external health benefits. Myrrh has been used throughout history as a perfume, incense, and health aid. It was also employed in embalming and religious ceremonies. Myrrh has powerful cleansing properties, especially for the mouth and throat. It is also soothing to the skin—promoting a smooth, youthful-looking complexion—and promotes emotional balance and well-being.

Respiratory Support for Springtime

3/19/2017

So many people this time of year are experiencing seasonal allergies. Are you itching, sneezing, and looking for some respiratory support? Well, did you know that there is an oil for that?
Here are 5 blends for Springtime Respiratory Support:

1. Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint
Rub 1 drop of each on to the bottoms of the feet and chest every day. Also, many like to take a drop of each internally to combat seasonal threats. Simply place one drop of each oil in a veggie capsule and swallow daily.

2. Breathe Blend
This is a pre-made blend that contains Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Ravensara, and Cardamom, and it is fabulous for respiratory support! Rub a drop or two on the chest, on the back of the neck, or on to the bottoms of the feet for relief.
3. Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint, Frankincense, Melaleuca, and Breathe
My friend uses this blend every day, year-round. It's great for when you need seasonal respiratory support or even when you are around pets that cause respiratory issues. She puts 20 drops of each oil in a 10ml roller ball and tops it off with Fractionated Coconut Oil. The blend can be rubbed on your sinuses, chest, back of the neck, or bottoms of the feet.
Picture
4. Melaleuca (aka: Tea Tree Oil)
This is a gentle oil to help combat seasonal threats and to support the respiratory system. Rub a drop or two on the bottoms of the feet, back of the neck, or chest.

5. Helichrysum and Eucalyptus
This is a great blend to support the nasal cavity. Use 3-4 drops in a diffuser or apply 1-2 drops on to the bottoms of the feet and back of the neck.

All of these are great to diffuse as well!

Hydration and essential oils

2/24/2017

Picture
Hydration is a very important consideration even at this time of year.  People are typically more dehydrated in the winter than in the summer. We don't usually associate colder weather with dehydration because the body does not get as hot in the colder months and the body's thirst response becomes diminished. In order for the body to conserve heat at its core, our blood vessels constrict and prevent blood from freely flowing to the extremities. The body is fooled into thinking that it is properly hydrated because we do not feel thirsty and therefore, we are less likely to drink water voluntarily. But hydration is critical - and here is why...

What does water do for my body?
Water is a nutrient essential to life. It is the primary component of all bodily fluids - blood, lymph, digestive juices, urine, tears, and sweat - and is involved in almost every bodily function. Water makes up 60% of our total body weight and is second in importance only to air for sustaining life. It is impossible to sustain life for more than a week without it.
Some uses of water
  • Regulates the body’s temperature
  • Cushions and protects vital organs
  • Lubricates and cushion the joints
  • Aids the digestive system
  • Helps with weight loss
  • Acts within each cell to transport nutrients and dispel waste
  • Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and evacuation.
Picture
Dehydration
Without enough water, we literally dry ourselves out. Dehydration is linked to chronic health problems like arthritis, diabetes, colitis, high blood pressure, kidney stones, and multiple sclerosis.
Dehydration symptoms
  • Dark urine / constipation
  • Dry skin / dry mouth
  • Extreme thirst
  • Dizziness / fatigue
Picture

Don’t like the taste of plain water?
Infuse your water with flavors, like cucumbers, strawberries, lemons, or fresh herbs. A water pitcher infused with fruit is great to have on hand.

What if I do not have any fruit or herbs on hand?
Try essential oils. Besides making your water taste great, they have additional benefits (see chart to the left). The brand that I trust is doTERRA. You can use doTERRA oils internally. They last for a very long time and are portable - you can take them with you anywhere. If you are interested in trying these incredible oils, please contact me or click the above doTERRA link and then click "Join and Save".
